SIM105- Faculty/Facilitator Responsibilities


  1. Simulation Faculty/Facilitator- Any person meeting minimum simulation competencies, as determined by the Director of Education, who is associated with the delivery and planning of the simulation activity.
  2. Lead Simulation Faculty/Facilitator- A Simulation Faculty/Facilitator that is responsible for the overall development and delivery of the simulation activity.


  1. All Simulation Facilitators will complete orientation to ensure a safe and quality simulation based educational event.
  2. This orientation/reorientation will be performed annually by completion of the Simulation Educator Needs Assessment Tool survey and the CHIPS Simulation Best Practice online training modules.


  1. The Simulation Educator Needs Assessment Tool survey will be completed annually by each Faculty/Facilitator who submits a request for simulation-based educational events at CHIPS. The Director of Education is responsible for maintaining the list of facilitators who have completed the annual requirements.
  2. All Simulation Faculty/Facilitators will demonstrate Phase 1 Simulation Professional Development basic competency by completing the CHIPS Simulation Best Practice online modules. The Director of Education will follow up with simulation faculty/facilitators to ensure completion within ninety days of enrollment.
  3. Faculty will be oriented to the simulation policies, templates, post-event surveys, pre- briefing methodology and debriefing framework through the CHIPS online modules and individual mentoring sessions.
  4. Faculty/Facilitator simulation orientation will include a review of the simulation event request process at CHIPS with attention to the critical elements specific to each modality.

All Faculty should contact the CHIPS Director of Education with a desire to progress to Phase 2 or Phase 3 of the Simulation Professional Development program.

Simulation Educator Orientation


As a UTHSC Faculty or community clinician, you will serve as the clinical content expert for any simulation-based educational activity created for your curricular courses. Mentoring for your additional role as the Simulation Educator is provided by the CHIPS Team, who will work to assist you with case design, prebriefing, simulation implementation and debriefing. On-going CHIPS Simulation Professional Development opportunities, both live and asynchronous, will also provide the support needed for your preparation as a Simulation Educator.


Our Simulation Education team provides clinical, educational, and technical expertise of simulation-based activities in our simulations. The individuals below can help you by collaborate with faculty to develop simulation scenarios to promote student learning, critical thinking and clinical decision making. They are excited to assist you with faculty development and training related to the use of simulation.

Annual Simulation Educator Needs Assessment Tool Survey

All Faculty and community clinicians participating in simulation- based education activities in CHIPS will complete an annual Simulation Educator Needs Assessment Tool survey.

The needs assessment survey results assist the CHIPS Education Team in providing professional development opportunities and mentoring that will meet the individual needs of our Simulation Educators. This survey will be sent to all individuals with event confirmations for fall and spring events.

CHIPS Sim Educator – Level 1

After completion of the needs assessment survey, all Faculty and community clinicians will meet with the CHIPS Education Team for a mentoring and case design discussion. Access to the CHIPS onboarding modules will be discussed and faculty will be expected to complete the modules within 90 days of enrollment. These modules provide detailed orientation to CHIPS and simulation best practice standards, including prebriefing,

case design, facilitation, debriefing and simulation enhanced IPE. Completion of asynchronous modules will require approximately 30-50 minutes per module (there are currently four simulation foundational modules).

CHIPS Sim Educator – Level 2

Faculty who wish to further their simulation pedagogy expertise would enroll and complete the Simulation Medallion. This medallion program provides a deeper understanding of the history of simulation-based education and simulation best practice standards. A Simulation project will be developed based on simulation educational theories and frameworks. Completion of this program requires approximately twenty hours of effort.

CHIPS Sim Educator – Level 3

Faculty who strive for more advanced simulation knowledge and practice will concentrate on the completion of the Simulation Research Medallion. This medallion program provides an overview of research and assessment as related to simulation pedagogy and simulation impact on healthcare education and delivery. All Faculty participating at this level will complete the program assignments with mentoring from the CHIPS Director of Assessment and Research and the CHIPS Director of Education.

Quarterly CHIPS Simulation Professional Development webinars
