The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) relies on the colleges and academic programs to determine the appropriate nomenclature for courses. The program faculty are best positioned to identify course numbers based on the level of the student and the academic curriculum. Changes in the course numbering system for an individual program are the responsibility of the faculty in consultation with the Registrar.
UTHSC courses are identified by an alphabetic subject area code (e.g., PHAR = Pharmacology) called the course code and a numeric code (e.g., 605) called the course number. The alphabetic course code identifies the subject area or college. A program may use several alphabetic codes for courses in the curriculum. For example, College of Dentistry may use the code ORTH for Orthodontics and DPHY for Physiology/Dental. The numeric code typically identifies the course level.
The course numbering systems for each College and/or program are listed below:
100 Level: D1 Courses
200 Level: D2 Courses
300 Level: D3 Courses
400 Level: D4 Courses
